On another thread, FishtownMike was wondering where to find replacement 12-string 6-on-plate tuners for a slothead. It's a lot harder to find these than it used to be and when you do they tend to be cheapies. In one of their Trade Secrets newsletters, Stew-Mac shows how to make a decent set out of mandolin tuners:

It's a good solution if you're building a new guitar, but for replacement tuners you'd want to make sure the distance between tuning posts matched your old set. You'll probably want to do that even if you find a six-on-a-plate set, as I'm not sure all those guitars used a standard distance between posts.

You can use the new individual Grover Sta-Tites to replace 12 string slot head (as on Martin D-12 20 and D-12 35) tuners. Grind back the plate tips on the units so that a single screw will secure two plates (a' la' the old Fender tuners). I suppose this would work with the Waverly tuners as well but I mention the Grovers due to their much lower price and higher gear ratio.
